THE POLITICS OF SNOW

Remember in the movie Bull Durham when the frustrated manager of the minor league Durham Bulls angrily broke down the simplicity of playing the game of baseball by saying "this is a simple game. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball." Well, former providence Mayor the late Vincent Cianci often sighted the simplicity of being a successful Mayor by saying "you pick up the garbage and you plow the snow." Of course, there's a lot more to being a successful mayor than that but it's the best way to ingratiate yourself with your constituents. You pick up the garbage, you plow the snow. Simple right? Not always. Many times it's all in the timing. Remember the December debacle in 2007 when everyone expected a quick hitting moderate storm late on a Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, that LATE storm started around noon and kids were dismissed at the same time as workers who were sent home and all hell broke loose on the highways. Some Providence school kids were stuck on buses for hours and criticism reigned down on Mayor Ciccilini for months.
