Council Overrides Mayor, Smoking Ban Now Law

(Providence, RI)  --  Smoking is no longer allowed in part of downtown Providence.  City council voted last night in favor of the ordinance, overriding a veto from Mayor Elorza.  The measure prohibits the use of all tobacco-related products in areas surrounding Kennedy Plaza and Burnside Park.  Supporters say the ban will improve public health, but opponents, including the mayor, say it targets the homeless and is a waste of resources.
