Jury Compensates Man Who Was Paralyzed

(Providence, RI) -- A veteran who was injured in a swimming accident at the University of Rhode Island's Alton Jones campus is being awarded a settlement of more than 31-million dollars. A Superior Court jury ruled last week that URI was negligent by not posting a no-swimming sign at a pond on the campus and awarded the money last week to Brett Smith and his wife Stacie. Smith, who fought in the Iraq War, became paralyzed from the chest down following the 2014 accident, which occurred while the couple was attending a wedding.
