(Providence, RI) -- There is an effort underway to repeal a ban on smoking in part of downtown Providence. WPRI-TV reports City Council member Sam Zurier is trying to lift the ban for the streets in the Kennedy Plaza and Burnside Park areas and a portion of Westminster Street near the Superman Building. Zurier, who said he was assured the ordinance was temporary when it passed in 2017, believes a permanent ban unfairly targets homeless people. A spokesperson for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, who vetoed the ban initially, says he supports the repeal effort.
