Mattiello Says He Has Support To Continue As Speaker

(Cranston, RI)  --  Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello told reporters outside of a private caucus held in a restaurant in Cranston on Thursday night that he has the votes to return as Speaker.  Mattiello said he was endorsed by about two-thirds of current and newly elected House members and claimed the representatives that did not vote for him were all progressives.  Mattiello will have to wait until the House reconvenes in January to officially be re-elected.  The Democratic caucus approved keeping his leadership team intact.  Rhode Island Senate Democrats also held a caucus on Thursday to re-elect Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and his leadership team.
