Man Rescued From Freezing Water By Jamestown Officer

(Jamestown, RI)  --  A Jamestown police officer is receiving praise for jumping into frigid waters to save someone.  The Jamestown Police Department says it responded after reports that a 34-year-old man from Brighton, Massachusetts, jumped off the pier and into the water in the town's East Ferry area overnight Thursday.  As officers attempted to get the subject to come back to the pier, he stopped moving, and that's when Officer Nathaniel Schaffer reportedly entered the water and was able to rescue him.  Both were taken to Newport Hospital for treatment; Schaffer was treated and released for mild hypothermia, while the condition of the other man was not released.
