(Providence, RI) -- The Providence City Council is approving a new contract for public school teachers. The three-year contract was approved at last Thursday's meeting by a 14-to-1 vote, after the teachers' union had already approved it. The last contract expired in August of 2017. The lack of a contract had led to friction between teachers and Mayor Jorge Elorza, including during last February's State of the City address, when teachers and their supporters shouted Elorza down.
