John Carlos, Olympic Athlete Who Protested, Speaks At URI

(Kingston, RI)--The Olympic medalist who made a statement during the Games in 1968 spoke at a diversity conference at the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday.John Carlos won the bronze medal at a track and field event and gave a Black Power salute on the podium with gold medalist Tommie Smith to protest racial injustice.Carlos was the keynote speaker for the URI's celebration of Black History Month.He told students that they don't need to be involved in as dramatic of an act as he was involved in to influence change.
