Lawmaker Proposes Study Of Decriminalizing Prostitution

(Providence, RI)--A Rhode Island legislator is suggesting looking into the decriminalization of prostitution.State Representative Anastasia Williams is the lead sponsor of a proposal to create a House commission to examine how a revision of sexual activity laws would impact health and safety. The resolution claims that the illegality of prostitution unfairly affects women, transgender individuals, and people of color. The sex worker advocacy group Coyote is endorsing the bill, saying decriminalization of indoor prostitution in Rhode Island from 2003 to 2009 led to a decrease in rape and STDs.
