Vandalism At Gardner House Came After Police Detail Removal

(Providence, RI)--The vandalization of convicted sex offender Richard Gardner's new home in Providence happened just one day after a dedicated police detail was removed.Gardner moved into the Washington Park neighborhood home last year after being released from a lengthy prison sentence for sexual assault, a move that drew immediate protests and prompted Mayor Jorge Elorza to order the 24-7 police surveillance.Providence PD Major David Lapatin acknowledged yesterday that the detail was removed last Friday, and that it had gone down from two officers to only one who was watching part-time.Lapatin called the expense of keeping an eye on Gardner dramatic and says the police department feels the neighborhood has had enough time to adjust.
