Federal Judge Blocks Trump Transgender Military Ban

A federal judge is blocking the Trump administration from moving forward with its transgender military ban. Today's ruling in U.S. District Court in DC comes days after the Pentagon announced it planned to put the policy in effect on April 12th.

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly says that move is “incorrect” and has issued a notice saying her previous injunction remains in place despite an appeals court order vacating the earlier decision. A Pentagon spokeswoman said it's consulting with the Justice Department on the next step.

As we told you before, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to lift two other injunctions in separate cases on the transgender policy back in February. As Jennifer Levi of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (who represents the plaintiffs) notes, “The Trump administration cannot circumvent the judicial process just to fast track its baseless, unfair ban on transgender service members.”
