State Legislature Passes Online Sale Tax Collection Bill

(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island General Assembly is passing legislation to collect sales taxes from online retailers. The legislation was introduced by Senator William Conley and Representative Marvin Abney, who are the chairmen of the Senate and House Finance Committees, and now moves to the governor's office. The bill cites a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision making it easier for states to compel tax collection from retailers who do not have a physical presence in the state. It requires remote sellers to register in Rhode Island for a permit.
