Senate Judiciary Committee Rejects Abortion-Rights Bill

(Providence, RI)--The volume was turned up in the State House on Tuesday after an abortion-rights bill failed in the state Senate Judiciary Committee.The Senate version of the bill, which was intended to codify the protections granted from the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, was voted down by a 5-to-4 measure, leading to protests from abortion-rights advocates and cheering from anti-abortion demonstrators.Senator Dawn Euer, one of the "yes" votes, said before her vote that contrary to rhetoric, women are not deranged murderers deciding to use abortion as birth control.The House version of this bill was held for further study, which led Senate President Dominick Ruggerio to acknowledge after the vote that there is opportunity for further action.
