Man Arrested Even Though State Constitution Protects Seaweed Collection

(Wakefield, RI)--A man is getting attention after he was arrested for picking up seaweed off a beach.Scott Keeley was recently on a stretch of Charlestown Beach and was told he had to move along because it was private property.Keeley was collecting seaweed for fertilizer and was arrested for trespassing after apparently picking up more seaweed before leaving. There has been a longstanding debate in Rhode Island about how far private landowner rights go when it comes to the water.Keeley pointed out that the Rhode Island state constitution has an article about public beachgoing freedoms that specifically mentions the gathering of seaweed.
