General Assembly Passes Abortion Rights Bill, Governor Signs It

(Providence, RI)--Legislation aiming to enshrine into state law the rights put in place by Roe v. Wade was signed by Governor Gina Raimondo last night after being passed by the General Assembly. The Senate approved the Reproductive Rights Act, 21-to-17, sent the revised version back to the House, which approved it again, before it went to the governor's desk. The bill says abortions are allowed up to the point when a fetus could live outside the mother's womb, and beyond that would be allowed when necessary to preserve a woman's health or life.An anti-abortion group attempted to secure a restraining order blocking the passage of yesterday's legislation, but was denied by a Superior Court judge.
