School Backtracks On Fifth Grader Dating Ban

As we previously told you, Riverside Elementary School in Jeffersonville, Indiana recently enacted a ban on dating for fifth graders. Teachers sent a note to parents saying that all the breakups were causing a lot of distraction, and the kids had two days to end their any relationships they may have. Well, now the school district is backtracking.

After many parents got upset by the “zero dating policy,” the Indiana school district insisted that it didn’t exist and wouldn’t be enforced, sharing that while it’s common for teachers to send out communications to parents, this note went a bit too far.

"The intentions of our teachers were to protect student feelings, encourage developmentally appropriate friendships, and protect instructional time,” read a letter from Greater Clark County School officials. “In retrospect, the phrases, 'zero dating policy' and the request to take Tuesday and Wednesday to 'end' relationships misrepresented the intentions of the teachers. While the team of teachers were trying to protect students, the wording is what caused alarm."

“There has never been a dating policy and we will [not] be implementing one," the school district’s information officer Erin Bojorquez, told Yahoo Lifestyle. “Our teachers were simply trying to maximize instructional time and unfortunately the message was not conveyed appropriately.”
