Soldier Praised As Hero After El Paso Shooting Is Accused Of Desertion

A Fort Bliss soldier praised as a hero for his actions during the El Paso Walmart shooting was arrested for desertion Wednesday night.

Glendon Oakley Jr went viral in the aftermath of the August shooting when he said in an interview that he tried to grab as many children at the Cielo Vista Mall as he could to get them out of harm's way.

Police say Oakley Junior is being held on a third-degree felony charge of military desertion. There are no details on why, but he’s being returned to the El Paso Army post.
