Rapinoe Named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year

Less than a week after being named the FIFA women's soccer player of the year,Megan Rapinoe is being named the “Sports Illustrated” Sportsperson of the Year. Rapinoe was one of the co-captains on the United States team that won the Women's World Cup in France this past summer and made waves for prodding President Donald Trump and standing with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Even prior to the World Cup, she and her teammates sued the U.S. Soccer Federation for pay discrimination against women. Rapinoe is the fourth woman to be individually named for the honor in the 66-year history of the title, appearing on the magazine's cover with purple hair and a sledgehammer.
