Trump Signs Emergency Declarations For Puerto Rico

FEMA says disaster relief is on the way to Puerto Rico after a major earthquake.

President Trump signed an emergency declaration after the island was rocked by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake Tuesday morning. The island was also hit with numerous aftershocks. The earthquake caused widespread power outages and at least one death.

The declaration will allow federal aid to be used for cleanup and humanitarian aid. FEMA can now have boots on the ground in the territory.

Meanwhile, experts are predicting more earthquakesin Puerto Rico. The U.S. Geological Survey says 6.4 temblor was just one of over 500 quakes that have been recorded on the island since December 28th, and 32 of those quakes had a magnitude of 4.0 or greater. The USGS says the latest quake could be part of a sequence, leading to even larger quakes. It warns there's a seven-percent chance of one or more aftershocks in the week ahead that are larger than magnitude 6.4.
