Pelosi Says She Will Send Impeachment Articles To Senate Next Week

Nancy Pelosi And House Members Hold Meetings On Capitol Hill

In a letter sent to her Democratic colleagues on Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she is preparing to send the two articles of impeachment of President Donald Trump to the Senate next week, paving the way for a trial to begin.

Pelosi wrote she would be consulting with members of her party on Tuesday, as the next steps were taken to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate.

"I have asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to be prepared to bring to the Floor next week a resolution to appoint managers and transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Democrats. "I will be consulting with you at our Tuesday House Democratic Caucus meeting on how we proceed further."

House managers act as the prosecutors of President Donald Trump during the Senate trial. A floor vote will be held to name impeachment managers before the articles can be transmitted to the Senate.

The articles, which accuse President Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, were being withheld by Pelosi because she said she wanted to ensure a fair trial was being held by the Senate.

"In an impeachment trial, every senator takes an oath to 'do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws,'" she wrote. "Every senator now faces a choice: to be loyal to the president or the Constitution."
