Fire Department Warns of Viral TikTok 'Outlet Challenge'

Another so-called 'viral challenge' is making the rounds on social media and fire officials in Massachusetts have issued a warning to parents to be aware of what their kids are up to online.

According to a release from the Holden Fire Department, the “challenge” seen on the popular video app, TikTok, involves using the plug part of a phone charger, partially inserting it into the wall outlet, and then sliding a penny down the wall onto the exposed prongs.

"The result is sparks, electrical system damage, and in some cases fire," the department wrote in a post about the 'viral challenge' on Facebook

The challenge has been linked to a series of scorching of outlets in Holden and Plymouth, Massachusetts. A fire that broke out at Westford Academy has also been blamed on students participating in the viral challenge.

The department went on to warn parents to follow electrical fire safety tips.

  • Insert plugs fully into sockets
  • If you have young children, install tamper-resistant electrical outlets
  • Replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit tightly, or show signs of damage.
  • Do not overload outlets
  • Never force a three-pronged plug into a two slot outlet.

Parents are advised to keep an eye on their kids as well as have a conversation about fire and electrical safety.

"In addition to electrical fire safety, the department would like to remind parents and children to discuss the dangers of certain online “challenges” and recognizing the dangerous activity on the internet," the statement added.
