Providence Firefighter Union President Says Vehicle Fleet Is Getting Old

(Providence, RI)--The president of the Providence firefighters union is calling attention to issues with the department's vehicle fleet.In a letter addressed to Providence City Councilman James Taylor, who serves as the chair of the council's Special Committee on Public Safety, union president Derek Silva says the vehicles have lost use of their brakes, fire apparatus catches fire and there have been numerous other issues.Silva said the Providence Fire Department has one of the oldest vehicle fleets compared with other urban departments in the state.Taylor, in responding, says he's calling for public testimony on the condition of the fire safety equipment.
