Rhode Island House Passes Hometown Police Chief Gun Check Law

(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island House yesterday by a 58-to-7 vote passed legislation to require a gun buyer's hometown police chief to be sent the firearm application. The bill was filed after last year's fatal shooting at an apartment complex in Westerly; the shooter had purchased a gun from a firearms dealer in Richmond, where police were reportedly unaware that the buyer had a history with Westerly law enforcement which included threatening to buy a gun and kill himself and his estranged wife. The measure now moves to the Senate, where similar legislation has been introduced.
