The "Angel of Hope And Strength" Sparks Controversy

The image created by RI School of Design grad Shepard Fairey, RI ANGEL OF HOPE AND STRENGTH unveiled by Governor Raimondo has certainly generated reaction. Fairey says the image depicting a nurse holding a torch near the RI motto “Hope” was intended to honor the strength and bravery displayed by healthcare and public safety workers. Fairey’s best known for the Obama HOPE poster….I remember him best for putting Andre the Giant’s face on a Buddy Cianci for mayor billboard when he was at RISD, but that’s another matter. Some see WW 2’s Rosie the Riveter or the Statue of Liberty. Others say it reminds them of Joseph Stalin or Chairman Mao. The RI Center for Freedom and Prosperity says the image “features a bastardization of the Statue of Liberty wearing a communist Chinatype cap in a layout reminiscent of posters supporting fascist dictatorships of the past. Others supported it with the RI State Council on the Arts suggesting on Twitter putting it on a postage stamp while another on the same thread wants to make a decal so “we can put it on our cars. I think East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva , who likes it, out it best saying art interpretation is in the eye of the beholder.
