(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island Attorney General's Office is preparing to defend the constitutionality of the state's new law giving sex abuse victims more time to file lawsuits.A spokesperson for the office told The Providence Journal last week the state Superior Court has been advised of its intention to file a friend-of-the-court brief concerning lawsuits brought by several alleged abuse victims against the Catholic Diocese of Providence, which argues the new law is unconstitutional.The A.G.'s office says it will not get involved in the separate question of whether the diocese can be held liable as a "perpetrator", which is the term used in the state law to describe who abuse victims can sue.
