"Plantations" Being Dropped From Providence And State Documents


(Providence, RI)--The full name of our state remains Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, but those who want "Plantations" removed from the title because of the word's association with slavery are slowly getting their way.Governor Raimondo plans to sign an executive order today to remove the word from official documents and state websites.Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza signed an order on Friday to remove "Plantations" from city paperwork.A resolution to ask voters to decide on officially changing the state name has cleared the state Senate.
