State Supreme Court Rules On Cases Involving Providence Pensions

(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island Supreme Court made several rulings late last month regarding the city of Providence's pension system. The state Supreme Court sent a case back to Superior Court that centers around a 2012 ordinance which allows the city to suspend cost-of-living adjustments. The high court's opinion was that suspending the pension until it is 70-percent funded fails to meet an exception for following state and federal constitutions. The RI Supreme Court also ruled that the Providence City Council cannot change a pension plan if it has already been changed by the courts.
