Rhode Island Republicans are proposing a temporary end of the state tax on gasoline.
“If people aren’t spending as much on gas, they’re spending it elsewhere in the community. On things they need for their family and at local businesses. And that spending will not only help families when it comes to kitchen table economics and reducing financial strain, it will help the economy, too,”Senate Minority Leader Dennis Algiere Algiere.
The Gas Tax in Rhode Island is 35 cents a gallon and accounts for just under ten percent of the total price of a gallon of gasoline.
Lawmakers say that small business will also be impacted by the one year hiatus. The delivery industry has been hard hit by the high gas prices over the last year.
The measure is a Republican only proposal. Governor McKee has not weighed in on the proposal.
