Mayor On Standoff: "It Could Have Been Worse"

A 61-year-old man is dead as the result of a standoff with police in Providence. Officers responded to a house on Denison Street for a domestic assault call around 2:30 Thursday morning. They got everyone else out of the house safely but Scott McLean barricaded himself inside. Authorities say that after trying to make contact with the suspect for several hours he started shooting and officers returned fire. Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare says in all his years he had never seen anything like the incident. He said that MacLean was not interested in engaging in talks with police.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza told reporters that there was some luck involved -- that no public safety people were hurt despite the hundreds of rounds being fired off. He said "it could have been worse".

The Mayor thanked state and local police for their efforts in protecting the neighborhood. He says their training paid off.
