Congressman Langevin: "Ukraine Being Attacked By A Thug"

Rhode Island Congressman Jim Langevin reacted late Wednesday night to Russia launching a military attack in Ukraine. Tweeting, Langevin said the news was devastating and that he is praying for the Ukrainian people.

“I condemn the Russian Federation’s invasion of a sovereign, democratic Ukraine in the harshest terms possible. It is now clear that Vladimir Putin is dead set on reconstituting the borders of the former Soviet Union, and he is willing to sacrifice the lives of thousands of innocent Ukrainians to accomplish that goal. Putin himself has described the fall of the USSR as ‘the greatest political catastrophe of the 20th century.’ His recent actions have proven that we must take him at his word.

Langevin said Vladimir Putin must be stopped, and he must pay for his crimes.

“History will not look kindly upon Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. It is now up to the United States and our allies to discourage other world leaders from making a similar mistake ever again.”

The congressman said the U.S. and the international community must respond with a sanctions regime unlike any that they've ever imposed.
