Protecting Animals At The Zoo While Keeping Food Supply Safe

Officials at Roger Williams Park Zoo say they are taking steps to insure the safety of the animals against the Avian Flu.

It has been found in birds on the east coast and that has officials throughout the industry concerned.

Right now birds are not being kept outside and the most susceptible, like chickens and turkeys will be kept in mesh enclosures as a precaution.

Meantime, for those headed to the store, there are more headaches, soaring egg prices.

Bird flu has hit commercial poultry in 24 states, according to the USDA, leading to the destruction of millions of birds, including egg-laying hens.

Prices are up this week 44 percent from the same time last year.

Iowa, the nation's top egg producer, has been the hardest hit.
