"The Dunk" Stays Through June, But Then Questions Remain

There continues to be a large degree of uncertainty about the future of the Dunkin Donuts Center, affectionately called "The Dunk" by hockey, basketball and concert fans.

The Rhode Island Convention Authority is extending the current 20 year agreement that Dunkin Donuts has with the building through the end of June. That will get the building through the hockey season.

The Providence Journal says the current deal was inked nearly 20 years ago and was for just the arena. The total cost of the deal then was more than 8 point 6 million dollars. But the current deal being negotiated and reviewed with a variety of companies, presumably included in that list is Dunkin Donuts will be for more than just the building.

Officials say the rights deal would extend to include the Convention Center next door. Rights proposals can be presented up until May 4th.

The iconic Providence complex was built in the early 1970's. It started out being called the Providence Civic Center.
