State Hits The Brakes On Vehicle Excise Tax

Pending House and Senate approval, the Rhode Island motor vehicle excise tax is being eliminated this year, one year ahead of schedule.

Governor McKee and legislative leaders made the announcement today citing a state budget surplus.

The tax was already being phased out under a law passed five-years ago.

There is one exception in Rhode Island. Although most cities and towns will no longer send out bills, East Providence will.

They work on a different fiscal year than most of the state.
