Tip theft by employers is now against the law in Rhode Island.
A bill signed by Governor Dan McKee forbids employers from receiving any portion of tips from customers which are intended for tipped employees.
There are limited exceptions for credit card service charges on tips.
Sponsors say the law protects employees who depend on tips to increase their wages.
The measure had been going through the legislature in various versions since 2015.
