Judge Dismisses Suit Over Synagogue Control In Newport

Legal drama is continuing for a historic Newport place of worship.

Louis Solomon, the president of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City, says it is committed to "regime change" at Touro Synagogue.

The statement came after a Rhode Island District Court judge made a ruling on Monday which the synagogue's tenants, Congregation Jeshuat Israel, described as a stay of eviction.

A motion was dismissed on a technicality, and Solomon says the case will proceed.

The two congregations have been involved in a decade-long dispute over a plan to sell off a set of high-priced silver bells in order to create an endowment fund.

Dedicated in 1763, the Touro is the oldest synagogue in the United States.
