Federal Judge Declares Truck Only Tolls Unconstitutional

A joint statement has been put out by the leaders of the Rhode Island General Assembly after a federal judge's ruling against the Ocean State's highway-tolling system for tractor-trailers.

“We just learned about the ruling in the long-running litigation process resulting from the 2016 legislation. The General Assembly prohibited the tolling of passenger cars, and regardless of the eventual outcome of this lawsuit, that will not change,” said Speaker Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) and President Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence).

Governor Dan McKee's administration has not yet decided whether to file an appeal.

Rhode Island became the only state in the country with a tolling system that exclusively bills big rigs in 2018.
