Rally Seeks To Save Green Space In Pawtucket

The city of Pawtucket is moving forward with the sale of Morley Field, a neighborhood park valued by local residents as their only green space.

The vote at an October 19th meeting was 5-to-4 to OK the purchase and sale of about half the field to a developer with plans to pave it as a warehouse parking lot.

The other parcel was gifted to the city, meaning the sale would require special legislation from the General Assembly.

And because a grant from the National Park Service paid for the original purchase, the city will have to submit a replacement green space.

State Representative-elect Jennifer Stewart and Pawtucket City Councilor Clovis Gregor are planning a rally outside City Hall Thursday at 4 p.m.to try to save the site.

They say Morley is an invaluable oasis for a densely-populated corner of the city.
