One current and one former North Providence police officer are facing state embezzlement charges.
Detective Christopher Petteruti is on unpaid leave. Former lieutenant Dennis Stone retired last month.
A grand jury returned an indictment against the two after a years-long investigation by the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.
Petteruti and Stone are charged with embezzling an undisclosed amount of money from the North Providence police union. It is unclear how much money was allegedly embezzled.
Petteruti served as union treasurer, and Stone was president.
They have pleaded not guilty in Superior Court.
The defendants are scheduled for a pretrial conference on April 12, 2023, in Providence County Superior Court.
