Even though this winter wasn't as severe as last winter, potholes are a certainty at the end of any Rhode Island winter. With every snow storm or freezing cold day, the number of potholes on Rhode Island roads continues to grow.

In a 2022 Providence Journal article, reporter Jack Perry reported that Clunker Junker, a junk car seller, claims that Rhode Island has the highest number of pothole complaints on Twitter, per square mile, giving the state the title of "Pothole Capital of the U.S."

If you hit a pothole and sustain damage to your vehicle, you may be entitled to reimbursement of expenses by the state Department of Transportation, up to $300. Be sure to note the exact location and time/date of the incident, and keep a record of any expenses and repair estimates. Claims can be filed on the RI Department of Transportation website, which also contains detailed information about eligibility and the documentation required to file a claim.
