A tragic incident unfolded in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday (November 11) night when a 62-year-old man drove his car into a crowd of people exercising near a popular sports center. The attack resulted in 35 deaths and left 43 people injured, according to local police. The driver, identified only by his family name of Fan, was apprehended as he attempted to flee the scene. He is currently receiving medical care for self-inflicted wounds.

The incident took place outside a gymnasium where hundreds of residents regularly gather to run, play soccer, or dance. Videos circulating on social media platforms showed dozens of bodies scattered across a long stretch of road outside the sports center.

Authorities have suggested that the driver was resentful over a divorce settlement, which may have motivated the attack. The Washington Post reported that Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for the "strict" punishment of the perpetrator according to law and urged local governments to strengthen prevention and control of risks at the source.

The incident has shocked the nation, with people laying floral tributes and lighting candles at the site of the tragedy. AP News reported that police set up barricades at the entrance to the sports complex, barring people from entering, but members of the public left bouquets by the square adjacent to the sports center.
