Governor Dan McKee wants to invest more money in the Health Professional Loan Repayment Program.
The state program helps physicians pay off their student loan debt and in return they commit to practice in federally designated health professional shortage areas within Rhode Island for at least two years.
On Wednesday, the governor stressed the importance of additional investments in the program, with the addition of 200-to-400-thousand-dollars in general revenue and 200-thousand-dollars in federal matching funds.
McKee says easing the financial burden and creating a path for talented health professionals to work in the state are wins for the health care community and all Rhode Islanders.
