Hundreds Demonstrate For And Against Rhode Island Assault Weapons Ban

Hundreds gathered at the State House in Providence Wednesday to speak out on the Rhode Island Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2025.

A Second Amendment rally took place ahead of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on the measure that would ban the sale, purchase, and possession of assault weapons.

Gun rights advocates say the bill goes too far and it's unconstitutional.

Governor Dan McKee says the ban would make Rhode Island safer.

Opponents say criminals will always be able to get a gun.

Groups that included Moms Demand Action and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence rallied in support of the legislation.

Lawmakers have kept the bill in committee for further study.
