Mayor Has Plan To Regain Control Of Local Schools

Mayor Brett Smiley has released the city's plan for returning the Providence Public School District to local control.

The mayor says he hopes the 60-page report will show state leaders that the city is ready to regain control of the schools.

The Mayor says, "For two years, we’ve listened to teachers, students and families. Now we’re ready to lead with a clear, community-driven plan focused on student success, stronger systems and local leadership."

Department of Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green says releasing the report a good first step, but the state-run schools have made progress since the takeover started in 2019, and she wants the district to continue that progress.
