Experts Say Koalas 'Functionally Extinct'

Some very sad news on the adorable animal front. Experts are declaring that koala bears "functionally extinct." That means there aren’t enough breeding adults support another generation.

At the moment, officials estimate there are only 80-thousand wild species members. “This is approximately 1% of the 8-million Koalas that were shot for fur and sent to London between 1890 and 1927,"chairman Deborah Tabart says in a statement. She adds that the population could even be as low as 43-thousand.

So what happened? The AKF says the marsupials have been victim to rising temperatures that have caused widespread deforestation and dehydration. In fact, only 41 of the koala's 128 known habitats in federal environments have any of the tree-dwelling creatures left.
