SCOTUS To Be Asked To Review Synagogue Case

The United States Supreme Court is being asked to review a case involving a Newport place of worship.  An attorney for the Touro Synagogue tells The Newport Daily News that he will be filing a petition for review by next Monday to have the nation's highest court look at a federal court's decision to grant ownership of the synagogue to a New York congregation, Shearith Israel.  Touro is the oldest synagogue in the country, while Shearith is the oldest congregation.  Federal judges had ruled that Shearith owns Touro under an agreement from over a century ago, and that Newport worshipers are only tenants.
