Normally the State of the Union is a boring affair with the most interesting part counting how many times a sitting President gets applause but last night's speech piqued interests coming off a 35 day partial government shutdown (with another looming),and President Trump in a rhetorical war with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Watching Pelosi sitting stone faced behind the President was an awkward thing to watch and, as expected, Democrats sat on their hands throughout. With Democrats now controlling things, it's unlikely if not impossible for the Trump administration to move its targeted legislation forward, so it was vital President Trump satisfied his core supporters when it come to fulfilling his key campaign promises...an improved economy and the monolith promise of a border wall along the southern border. Funding the wall, of course, is the main sticking point that led to the shutdown and could lead to another on February 15th or possibly Trump declaring a state of emergency to get the wall built. President Trump DID call for bipartisan cooperation and compromise in the State of the Union speech but he also needed to reinvigorate his core supporters as he ramps up for re-election in 2020. In that regard it was MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Bottom line, if you were a supporter of President Trump you were fired up by his speech last night...if you weren't a supporter going in, you weren't once coming out.
