Not every BIG idea is a GOOD idea. While encouraging people to think OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, sometimes we can wander too far. The chairman of the Providence Board of Licenses, Dylan Conley, is proposing the creation of a 24/7 nightclub and entertainment district along Allen's Avenue. Conley says such a district bring in "an ungodly amount of money" as well as solve nuisance problems. Providence has certainly had a recent rash of crime and violence connected to night clubs. Conley points out such entertainment districts are home runs on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and the strip in Las Vegas. I don't know about you, but when I think Allen's Avenue, I think Bourbon Street and the Vegas Strip! Conley thinks such an entertainment center would attract bachelor parties from New York and Boston....oh, they don't have places to hold bachelor parties there? Perhaps Mr. Conley has missed the fact The French Quarter has decades of historical charm not to mention sensational jazz music while the Vegas strip has great restaurants to big time celebrity shows for blocks on end. Has it dawned on Conley how much more money would have to be invested in the city's Police Department? Putting all your problems into one big basket and Conley's idea certainly seems to be fueled by the recent rash of night club violence. If we don't learn from history, we're doomed to repeat hit. Google the Boston Combat Zone and you'll catch my drift.
