Renaming John Wayne Airport?

Orange County California’s Democratic party wants to see John Wayne ride off into the sunset again. Back in 1979, Orange County’s airport was christened John Wayne airport but Democrats there have crafted a resolution to remove the Duke’s name in an effort to “oust white supremacist symbols and names that are reshaping American Institutions, monuments, businesses, non profits, sports leagues and teams.” As the search for any past indiscreet remark as grist to take use against someone in this effort becomes a national pastime, a 1979 PLAYBOY magazine interview with Wayne has resurfaced in which the Duke made bigoted remarks against blacks, Native Americans and the LGBTQ community. He said “ I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.” Although he didn’t condone slavery, Wayne said “ I don’t feel guilty that 5 or 10 generations ago these people were slaves.” And of Native Americans, Wayne said “I don’t feel we did wrong in taking away this great country from them. The Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.” And for the LGBTQ icing on the cake, Wayne called films EASY RIDER AND MIDNIGHT COWBOY “perverted and used gay slurs to refer to the two films main characters.” I got a feeling it’s HAPPY TRAILS to John Wayne airport.
