Officers Cleared For Involvement In Shooting

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Attorney General's office says a Providence County grand jury is finding that three Pawtucket police officers were justified during a fatal shooting in September.  DaShawn Terrell Cole was killed after a confrontation with police, who were responding to a 911 call from a motorist who claimed a man bent down to tie his sneaker and exposed a gun on his belt.  Officer Ana Vertentes was the first to arrive on the scene on Newport Avenue and was reportedly attacked by Cole.  Police said Vertentes discharged her firearm during the struggle, and officers William Briggs and Dianne Rittman-McLaughlin opened fire when Cole, who was reportedly still armed, confronted them.
