Panel Agrees To Plan To Reduce Right Whale Deaths

(Providence, RI)--New recommendations are being made for reducing North Atlantic right whale entanglements caused by fishing gear, which are expected to mostly affect lobster fisheries.A group of scientists, conservationists, fishermen and government officials appointed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration agreed to a plan at a meeting in Providence on Friday.States would take different measures to protect the endangered species if the plan is approved by NOAA.In Rhode Island, lobstermen would reduce the number of vertical fishing gear lines running from the ocean bottom to surface buoys by 18 percent over the next three years, according to a report from The Providence Journal.
